Bunnies

It all started simply enough, I was looking for something new to try and I wanted it to be easy and not require a lot of materials, so I picked up a new book by  Carla Sonheim “Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals“.  How hard could it be to draw some imaginary animals? The only problem is I haven’t made it past the first few exercises!

I spent weeks creating blob animals, filling pages and pages of watercolor paper full of blobs, turning the paper this way and that waiting for the animal to show itself to me. It was so much fun! Rabbits, cats, dragons and lots of imaginary creatures appeared. I even recruited some friends and family to try making blob animals (although for some it was too stressful).

Then I got to the next exercise of creating blob cats. Or maybe it was one of her mini classes? I’ve spent months on cats, drawing, coloring and even painting them on wood blocks.

For Christmas I decided to make bunnies and give them to friends as cards, so needless to say I’ve spent a lot of evenings in December trying to get enough “good” bunnies to give out.

First they were simple line art, sometimes done with my left hand or my eyes closed.

Then I started coloring them with watercolor pencil or using brush markers on paint samples.

I even spent a few days using a gelli plate and created quite a few on deli paper. (what to do with those?)

I ended up using some as tissue paper in gift bags.

I think I still have more bunnies and cats waiting to be drawn. I’ve been trying to do some cows and chickens, so that will be another post.

It is going to take me years to get through this book! But I love it and am looking forward to the next adventure.
